HAVEN OF HOPE, HOMELESS SHELTER

DISCIPLESHIP INC.

LENDING A HELPING HAND

 WHAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED!

We have had over 2 successful years helping people in need by giving them a safe place to live and tools to improve their lives.  Since our opening we have served over 75 homeless from many different walks of life.  Our beds have been kept full with a ‘waiting list’ for new people always in process.

When some people think about homelessness they visualize people as being. by their own choice, lazy, or using drugs & alcohol, and being useless, and a menace to society.

This is what is shown on TV and in movies where people are living in the streets in cardboard boxes.  But in all actuality a homeless person could be your next door neighbor, friend, or a relative.  No one knows where life will take you.  No one should ever assume a disaster couldn’t happen to you.

Many of the people who have used our facility were homeless because of lost jobs, divorces, getting out of jail or prison, just needing a place for a short time until they can get back on their feet.  We have housed veterans, single men & women who don’t qualify for other services or facilities, people who have been evicted due to a lack of affordable housing.  Any situation can be ‘unique’ in itself.  In this short time we have had experienced support from many people and organizations that have helped to make our program a success and it is deeply appreciated by the staff and the people living at the shelter.

THRIFT & NOVELTY SHOPPE

Stop in and check our stock to find your special treasure.

In March of 2007 we received a matching-fund grant to renovate a room attached to the shelter.  This grant was used to help promote women in business.  This is now the location of our tri-county Thrift & Novelty Shoppe

The intention of the shop is to help with the shelters tenant housing expenses, as well as, future ‘job training skills’ for the shelter tenants that would like to be involved.

We are currently open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10am to 3pm.  We have a large variety of items from clothes to dishes, religious items, games, printers, microwaves, and some party supplies.  We are also featuring raffles.  Any interested volunteers are welcome to come in and apply to help out.

VOLUNTEERS  NEEDED FOR ….. FUNDRAISER'S & SHELTER PROJECTS

Volunteers are something that is desperately needed.  We still do not have funding to pay for staffing, and depend largely on people to share their free time and talents.  We have food booths at 3 fundraisers every year and could use extra people to work a couple of hours to relieve other workers so they may rest and enjoy part of the celebrations also.  Anyone interested in working in the shop or helping in the shelter is also a great need to help in the office and to help residents with information.

GRANT WRITERS NEEDED

We would appreciate a call for anyone experienced in writing grants.  We are in desperate need of funding for repairs, a new roof, windows, and staffing.  There are grants for these things out there, but the knowledge and time needed to perform this task is in short supply.

WEBSITE

Discipleship Inc/Haven of Hope now has a web site to keep the public informed about upcoming events and items of interest regarding the shelter and the Thrift and Novelty Shoppe.  We will feature our raffles and other points of interest.

We will also be offering an advertising section for companies and for people to list their rummage sales for a very low price.

COUPON BOOKS

Our yearly coupon book sales for Oconto and the Marinette/Menominee area are now on sale.  There are many valuable coupons to use.  Everyone wins with this fundraiser.  Not only are there buyer’s savings, but also it helps area business’s serve the needs of the people, and Haven of Hope has more funds to work with.

If you are a non-profit organization and would like the opportunity to raise extra fund for your organization, we are willing to help you, as well as, help us!  Call Dorothy for more information at 715 735-3684.
